Gourdin family papers, 1727-1888.

Papers consist of legal documents, correspondence, business papers, estate and property records, genealogical material, and other items. Included are the papers of Theodore Samuel Gourdin (1823-1861), the records of the law firm of Rutledge & Young, and a telegraphic code book of Gourdin, Matthiessen & Company. Property records include a list (n.d.) of plats of family land grants in various counties of South Carolina; a deed (1777) of land along the PeeDee River (S.C.) to Ely Kershaw; a deed (1795) of land along the Wateree River (S.C.) to Samuel Boykin; and a plat (n.d.) of Pinckney family property in Charleston (S.C.). Correspondence includes letters (1809-1852) to Eliza S. Courtney [Courtenay?] of Charleston (S.C.) from family and friends in Philadelphia (Pa.), Boston (Mass.), New York (N.Y.), and elsewhere regarding personal matters and family and social life; and correspondence of John Algernon Sidney Ashe (a Gourdin relative) with lawyer Thomas S. Grimke concerning the estate of his father John Ashe, with related documents. Genealogical material (1727-1852) concerning the Gourdin family and related families includes clippings, copies of wills, notes, family Bible records, and other items.

South Carolina family. Samuel Gourdin (1766-1821) was the owner of Buck Hall Plantation on the Cooper River (S.C.). His children included Rebecca Ann Gourdin (1805-1881), Henry Gourdin (1804-1879), and Dr. Theodore Gourdin. Rebecca Ann Gourdin married Rev. Thomas J.
